Thea stood with a firm stance on the dojo. The practice had already started, and some Pokémon were already sparring, along with some human martial artists that were training as well.[break][break]

Being singled out this time, Thea spent most of the time moderating the sparrings and making sure no one was getting hurt, on top of calling out when someone was with either a poor posture or going overboard. After all, it was a training of something that covered far more technique than just brute force.[break][break]

She couldn't lie though, only watching and taking care of others felt a bit boring, and even her Pokémon trio seemed to be taking the most of today's training. To think she would envy her own Pokémon.[break][break]

However... Soon another face appeared in the dojo. A new one at that, and Thea perked up, approaching as soon as there was an opening for her. Adjusting her karategi and bowing, Thea greeted the newcomer. "Good afternoon! If you came for a training, it has already started!" She declared. "But— It is never too late to start." Thea said, almost challenging him to join them. But she didn't know what were his intentions by coming to this dojo.[break][break]

A pang of nostalgia rolls over Dewford’s sheriff as he walks the streets of Slateport. In what feels like another life, this was his home. He knew these streets like the back of his hands. The dojos in the lower distract always added character to a sleepless city poets insist has no soul.[break][break]
Duty and propaganda mix like a cocktail to bring him here. When Navy climbed the region’s last empty Elite Four chair, he was given a brand manager. He picked a type and a title, something to help sell him to the people of Hoenn. Pulling on an old legend from a distant land, he branded himself the fighting master.[break][break]
A Fighting Master must, on occasion, visit the region’s many dojos. Shuwen, his Urshifu, relishes each visit. His bear is the real fighting master, and few things make him smile quite like a challenge. When Navy enters the dojo, he does so with the Urshifu a mere pace behind him. Shuwen stands taller than Navy, a trail of burned flesh crossing one side of his face.[break][break]
“Afternoon, Miss.” Navy tips his hat to the young lady who greets him. “I’m Navy. Elite Four, Fighting-type specialist. Just making the rounds of the dojos.” Pointing a thumb over his shoulder to Shuwen, the bear bows his head in greeting.[break][break]
“Be happy to train with you. Shuwen here’d be excited to spar with any Pokemon in the dojo.”

Thea's attention was divided between the man and his Pokémon. It wasn't hard to notice that they were nothing short of extremely tough, and when the man introduced himself and his pokémon, her eyes grew wide. "An Elite Four? It will be an honour to have a chance to practice with you!" She chuckled, and her attention was then drawn to Shuwen. Her expressions softened with warm smile.[break][break]

"That's a very beautiful Urshifu too... It has been a while since I've seen one fighting with my own eyes. That will be fun." The warmth of her expressions became fiery with excitement for the opportunity in front of her.[break][break]

"It is nice to meet you, Mr. Navidson, and Shuwen." She offered a handshake, while a sense of familiarity to the man's name pricked her mind. Perhaps she had heard it on the TV before, but... Hmm.[break][break]

It didn't take long for her Primeape, Wigglytuff, and Minccino to approach, curious about what their trainer sudden interruption. Thea glanced back at them. "Hey guys, we have a challenger here. Zeus, do you think you can take our big friend here?" She gestured to Shuwen, and the Primeape approached, looking the bear pokémon up and down while assessing the situation before clenching his fist and huffing with his pig nostrils. "Haha, I knew it." Thea looked back at the man. "Seems like he is pumped up. So why don't you spar with me while my father is still instructing his students?"[break][break]

All the best trainers have color names, Navy.[break][break]
Gabe told him that with a wide, ear-splitting grin. The world was simpler in those days. Real, open Pokemon warfare was a thing reserved for television screens projecting distant matches, or packed stadiums. Slateport’s invasion was a harsh assertion of the world’s truth – that there is little beauty in open warfare.[break][break]
Yet Navy nods, happy for the chance to help a young trainer along. Talent is nine-tenths dedication. This young karate girl is here, and her eyes carry genuine excitement at the prospect of the coming spar.[break][break]
“Zeus, huh? Good name. Strong.” He smiles down at the Primeape. Shuwen is a mirror of his trainer, although his smile is much more subdued. The Urshifu walks, gets into position, falls into a fighting stance. Even if he is the challenger, Shuwen still affords the honor of the first blow to Zeus.[break][break]
“I’d offer to spar with you too, Miss, but my style’s more, uh, urban.” He learned to fight in the streets outside, where walking down the wrong alley could get you in deep trouble. “Don’t think I caught your name, by the by.”

When the Navy insisted on Thea using his name, she nodded. Some didn't like formalities, and Thea was honestly relieved in a way, not being too fond to it, but she knew better than treating people casually in her father's dojo.[break][break]

"Haha, that's okay, Navy!" Thea grinned to the man. He looked big and tough, but seemed very kind and Thea liked that. "A more urban, huh? Zeus could learn a bit from that, honestly. Sometimes he gets throw off by moves you don't usually see in the Dojo." She admitted, and then chuckled looking at the Primeape. "Did you see that, he called your name strong. So you need to show him you are too." She encouraged the Primeape.[break][break]

The other, much bigger Pokémon getting on a fighting stance pumped the Primeape even more, and Zeus held a fighting stance as well, but not before Thea interrupted for a moment.[break][break]

"Oh, where are my manners, sorry! My name is Thea. Since those two are so eager, how about we give them a good space for it?" She gestured to follow her to the center of the Dojo, where it is more spatious.[break][break]

“Thea.” The repetition is almost a question. It is a name that sits on the edge of his tongue like a key. There are many locked doors in his mind, leading to many long-forgotten things. The name would unlock something, somewhere, if only he could find the right lock.[break][break]
“Good name. Strong name. Short, but not in a bad way.” Michael is much too long, in his opinion, even if it is only two syllables. Her suggestion of changing the venue is met with a nod. Navy is sure they will have an audience before long, even if most of the students are training. He has a habit of attracting crowds when the inevitable ripple spreads across the pond. You don’t see Hoenn’s Elite Four out and about every day. Many of them are busy on all sorts of projects.[break][break]
Shuwen jumps into place, stretching and bulking up ahead of the coming fight. Raising his hands, tipped with honey-colored fingers, the burned bear motions for Zeus to come at him. There’s a visible gulf between the two, in terms of experience. It brings Shuwen joy to educate young fighters, just as it brings Navy joy to do the same for young trainers.[break][break]
“You had Zeus for a while, Thea? Since he was a Mankey?”

"Hehe... Thank you. Navy is a very strong name too. Reminds me of the colossal ocean." Thea rubbed her nape sheepishly as the compliment was delivered, and as she positioned herself, she watched as the large pokémon started to prepare himself for the combat. It wasn't hard to notice that it was a good opportunity for Zeus to get a bit more of the hang of things, since Thea wasn't allowed to go for Gyms yet, and the Pokémons that visited the Dojo were generally ones coming to learn. But that guy? It was clearly different.[break][break]

When questioned about Zeus, she nodded. "Yeah, since he was very little. It is the same for my other two over there." She gestured with her chin to her Minccino and her Wigglytuff, that were watching from the sides. "Is it the same for Shuwen?"[break][break]

Meanwhile, Zeus tried to Focus Energy, not getting into the combat so quickly without getting some preparations done himself. The call for a fight made him oink as he huffed, nodding and tapping his feet on the ground a couple times before charging forward, trying to find an opening on the much larger Pokémon, which was one disadvantage Zeus had to take into account.[break][break]

"Remember to not let your guard down, Zeus!" She warned.[break][break]

“He came to me in a dream.” He always likes saying it that way. There’s not a single lie in the sentence, even as it reveals absolutely nothing. Navy tries, through great effort, to not grin while saying the words. It’s still there, on the edge of his lips and the uptilt of his eyebrows.[break][break]
Shuwen does not pay any attention to banter among humans. Battle is the sacred call of the Urshifu. They hold Primeapes and their line in high esteem. As Zeus comes in, Shuwen sweeps with his leg and keeps up. Though the aerial ace might seem like a cruel opening salvo, kicking Zeus up into the air, Shuwen hopes the smaller Pokemon sees it as an opportunity.[break][break]
As Zeus is kicked up, it’s much easier to hit Shuwen’s chest and face. Call it a favor for a young warrior looking to figure out his fighting style.[break][break]
“You remember the battle in Dewford last year? Yeah…that’s where we ran into each other. There was this weird mist. I was about to be overwhelmed by paradox Pokemon and then he was just…there. Never got to see him as a Kubfu.” He wonders if Shuwen ever was a Kubfu, or if he simply materialized into existence one day as a grown, stoic warrior.[break][break]
“Pretty diverse team, I’ll give you that. Folks underestimate Wigglytuff.” A small nod is given towards her other Pokemon. “Right ‘til they make you fall asleep.”

"A dream..?" Thea muttered, looking at the man with wide open eyes. She didn't think it was a lie, being the type to take people's words at face value, especially if they were particularly nice... And that was the main reason for Thea's surprise as she glanced between Navy and Shuwen.[break][break]

As Zeus went flying to the air, he couldn't lie that it was unexpected. He could count on his thumbs the very few times he was struck like that, and it was a clear sign he needed to broad his horizons if he intended to be an actual good fighter. As he flew up, he tried at the very least to recover some stance midair, falling down with a Cross Chop aiming toward Shuwen, hoping to use the gravity as an ally. He always took a counter-attack opportunity.[break][break]

Thea's attention then returned to Navy as he told their story. "I remember hearing about it. I wasn't there, but there was no other topic in people's mouth when it happened." Her lips frowned. We never catch a break, do we?" It felt like Hoenn was constantly at war and under disasters. "... Did he save you from them? I don't think I've ever seen a Paradox Pokémon before." Thea muttered with a frown, but then she smiled a bit. "You two seem to be very good friends, and you did train him very well—!" There was even something in the Pokémon was fighting that was catching her attention.[break][break]

At the mention of the Wigglytuff, Gominha puffed herself a bit up, proudly. Thea chuckled. "You have no idea how many times this singing has saved me in the wild." She hid her lips with a giggle. "Don't tell my father though."[break][break]

Shuwen does not dodge. Instead, he rolls with the punch, taking a step back. Leaning with the momentum of the fist, he dampens the damage. Mitigation is an art, especially for warriors. Zeus packs a mean punch. There’s potential in him. Shuwen quietly contemplates how different this fight will be when the Primeape evolves.[break][break]
But he cannot simply stand by passively forever. Shuwen unleashes a small flurry of his signature surging strikes. They’re slower than they would be, his fists akin to the patter of rain. Defenses need to be tested as much as offenses, so he hopes to see how Zeus will dodge.[break][break]
“Shuwen pretty much trains himself. You hear it all the time, that it’s more a partnership. It really feels that way with him. Happy to have him, too. Back when my main thing was being a gym leader, I was the dragon gym leader. Shuwen had his work cut out for him, keeping all my dragons in line.” A task he still labors to accomplish, even if the horde mostly sorts itself out.[break][break]
“Having a trickster on your team’s always good. Here, let me introduce you to the most reliable guy on my team. He’ll show you what I’m talking about.” Unclipping a pokeball from his waist, he sends out the smallest Greninja most people have ever seen. Hattori is more an oversized Frogadier than a Greninja, puny and stunted. Yet his skin has been burned black by Groudon. His right eye was stabbed out by a Rocket underboss. He lives to tell the tale, and he gives Thea a polite bow.

Zeus is surprised at first. His hit has landed, but at the same time... Why it didn't feel like it actually connected? It was a strange feeling, Shuwen didn't even try to avoid the attack. In the Martial Arts setting Zeus was used to, that was unthinkable— After all, a hit from an opponent guaranteed a point for them, and maybe even the victory. But this was different, outside of the rules of the Dojo, it is about how many hits you can take, and still keep moving forward.[break][break]

This was reflected when Shuwen went for the offense, and Zeus didn't try to mitigate it. Instead, he tried to deflect the flurry of blows with blocks. Dodging wasn't much of his strength either, as he was sturdier rather than he was agile, so he relied on defending himself directly, and it showed he was good at blocking... But when the strike landed, it was clear he didn't know how to cushion it. Whenever an opening allowed, Zeus would try a Rage Fist in the form of a gyaku-zuki.[break][break]

"Oh, a Dragon-type Gym..." Thea whistled, nodding. Dragon-types were very menacing, in her eyes. But she couldn't lie they matched her idea of beauty and strength... Though, they were more inclined to power, in her mind. "And Shuwen kept them in line? Haha. He looks tough, I'm sure he managed just fine... But to think he trains by himself, it is an interesting thing. Some look at Pokémon as mere beings we need to train and use, but then there are those like Shuwen that shows things aren't that simple." She hummed, then looked back at Navy. "I like to think of them as my family. I train them, but overall, I leave them to have their own style. So I guess at the end of the day I'm more of a guide?" She chuckled.[break][break]

When Navy decided to introduce his 'reliable' guy, Thea blinked surprised at the sight. She has never seen a Greninja like that before, and at some point she almost thought it was a Pokémon she has never seen. "He seems like he has a lot of stories with him." Thea showed a bittersweet smile to him. Each scar was a sign of character, but it didn't make her heart ache less knowing how much he probably hurted in the past. After bowing back, she leaned in. "It is nice to meet you! You look very reliable, how do you help Navy?" She asked, resting her hands behind her back as she waited to learn more about the Greninja.[break][break]

Hattori blushes under Thea’s compliments. Coaxed by her question, he seems to disappear into Navy’s shadow. A heartbeat later, he clings to the martial artist’s back, tapping her on the shoulder. Leaping up, he uses a small spout of water to launch himself up to the roof. A brief display of acrobatics is all he can really do here in a structured setting. Much of his kit is meant for strife, and this place is fit for duels of peace.[break][break]
“He’s my scout.” Navy, who followed Hattori’s display quietly, finally speaks. “And my lead when I go all out as a Pokemon Trainer – not as a Gym Leader or Elite Four.” Hattori allows himself to fall from the roof, landing on Navy’s shoulders this time.[break][break]
“Speaking of…you look like you’re old enough to take the gym challenge. Surprised I haven’t seen you down in Dewford.” Maybe it’s wrong, encouraging someone so young to take his challenge, given how grueling it can be for inexperienced trainers. Memories filter in of all the people her age that have stormed out in tears. It is hard for the young to live out their dreams of becoming a Pokemon master with the region at war.[break][break]
Better she gets that lesson from me than Rocket. He thinks.[break][break]
Shuwen, meanwhile, holds up a hand to signal a short break to Zeus. Turning his cheek, he motions for the Primeape to hit him again. When the fist inevitably connects, he makes a show of rolling his head with the punch. Afterwards, he balls his hand into a loose fist, as if wishing to help Zeus practice the technique.

Thea's eyes tried to catch Hattori's movements, but he was way too fast. Before she could even blink, she felt a touch on her shoulder along with a mild weight on her back. She opened her eyes widely in surprise, turning to look at him, and seeing him so close so suddenly, she slipped a surprised sigh and a giggle, trying to reach for his head for a pat, but soon he was already all the way up to the ceiling, taking the breath out of Thea's lungs as she looked up impressed. "Woaah, he is so fast!" Her eyes went down to Navy's shoulder when Hattori decided to go down.[break][break]

"So you go all out as a trainer too, Navy? Your Greninja is amazing, I didn't see many in person, but he is surely the fastest one I've seen." She nodded. With those movements and those scars, she could only wonder how many risky situations he got himself in before learning all of them.[break][break]

As she looked at the Greninja fondly, Navy's following words caught her attention, and she suddenly raised her voice. "Right? I am old enough, right? My father keeps babying me, he doesn't let me take Gym Challenges until I'm done with high school!" She lamented, letting out a sigh. "And then he goes and tell me I don't know enough about the real world for that. But how will I learn if he doesn't let me out?" She pouted a bit.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Zeus halted at his opponent suddenly asking for a break. He blinked surprised, not understanding why, since the other wasn't even breaking a sweat yet. At the gesture, Zeus thought Shuwen was provoking him at first, but soon he realized something was off. He tilted his body initially, but then oinked and rotated his body for a punch. It landed, but once again, something was off... This time, however, it was possible to understand why it was happening. Shuwen was moving with his punch?[break][break]

Zeus blinked in realization, and when Shuwen showed he was about to go for a punch himself, Zeus oinked with a nod, trying to do the same as soon as the punch was about to connect. He tried to go along with it, being far from perfect or even successful, but he noticed the mild difference. He perked up, looking at his opponent surprised.[break][break]

Shuwen rarely smiles. When he sees recognition dawn in Zeus’s eyes, and when the young fighter takes his point, the bear grins ear to ear. A thumbs up accompanies the gesture and he stands up, falling back into his fighting stance. Practical experience is the best teacher.[break][break]
Rushing in, he aims to give Zeus ample time to get in some practice. Close Combat between fighting Pokemon is a sight to behold. His blows are a flurry – slowed, still, for the sake of the match, but a flurry all the same. He prays the younger Pokemon will come to understand what every fighter must – that there is more to mastering battle than simply using techniques as humans shout their names.[break][break]
“Maybe he just wants to keep you safe while the war’s on.” Navy doesn’t know the man from Mew, but he understands the sentiment. It is a grievous thing, to lose someone you have raised.[break][break]
“I…had a brother. Just a little older than you are. He went on his journey a few years back. Never got to complete it ‘cause of Rocket.” Once, it hurt just to talk about that. Time has mended the wound enough for him to show the scar.
